Bread is the one go-to thing when you are running short of time, or when you need a quick fix for any meal. Be it sandwiches, bread-upma, or pakoda; none is complete without bread.

Now is the time when most of us are switching to the ‘healthier’ versions of bread. The two names that come on top in the ‘healthy’ category are - brown bread and whole wheat bread. But how exactly do the two differ? Let’s find out.

Although they are both similar in color, whole wheat bread is made from the whole grain of wheat, i.e. the bran, germ, and endosperm. Bran is the outer layer of the grain, germ is the seed through which a new plant can be grown, and endosperm is the food for germ.

Since the whole grain is used to make the bread, whole wheat bread is rich in essential nutrients and fiber, which helps in the prevention of constipation, lowers bad cholesterol, lowers the risk of heart diseases, and also helps in controlling diabetes.

Brown bread, on the other hand, is mostly a mixture of white flour and whole wheat flour. The brown color can also come from additive colors like caramel.

Whereas the composition of fats and fiber might be similar in both the types of breads; brown bread has more calories than whole wheat bread.

To make sure that you are picking the best bread for yourself and your family, make sure you read the ingredients label carefully. Whereas ingredients starting with ‘whole’ indicate that the whole grain is used in making the bread; words like‘enhanced’ or ‘added’ indicate that the grain has not been used fully.

In fact, with just one search/scan, you can know everything about it on a single screen, only on GotoChef.
