Description

Digestive Biscuit is a semi-sweet biscuit. It originated in Scotland when two Scottish doctors prepared a biscuit to aid digestion. It is believed that these biscuits had antacid properties due to the use of sodium bicarbonate when they were first developed. A typical digestive biscuit is made up of a mix of ingredients like coarse brown wheat flour, sugar, malt extract, vegetable oil, wholemeal, raising agents (usually sodium bicarbonate, tartaric acid and malic acid) and salt. On an average a digestive biscuit has 70 calories, though this value varies according to the factors involved in its production. These days digestive biscuits that are coated on the underside with milk, dark or white chocolate are also available. When chosen right, digestive biscuits made with whole wheat and high fiber content help to maintain gut functioning and prevent common digestive problems like constipation.

Selection Guide

Make sure to read the label carefully before buying it. People with celiac conditions should be very cautious and avoid wholewheat biscuits.
