Usage Tips

  1. Disodium Phosphate can be used in fish in seafood to help keep them moist.
  2. It can be used to preserve sausages and cooked meats. It can also be used in baked goods, icecreams, jellies, dairy products, breakfast cereal, candied fruit, butter, chewing gum, chocolates, tofu, salt, soups, processed vegetables, pudding, pasta and alcoholic beverages.

Description

Disodium Phosphate is phosphates derived from the element phosphorus. It is a sodium salt obtained from phosphate rock in the earth. It is a combination of minerals phosphate or phosphorus, and sodium, used as a food additive and is recognized safe by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). It is purified and put through chemical reactions to make it food grade. It can be used to regulate the acidity of food, stabilize it, thicken it and also maintains moisture level. It can also be used as an emulsifier to keep oil-based and water-based ingredients, which would otherwise separate on mixing.

Check for its "use-by" date on the packaging before purchasing disodium phosphate.

Note

Consumption of disodium phosphates in large amounts can cause upset stomach, diarrhea, and constipation. Patients dealing with cirrhosis, heart failure or any other condition that can cause edema must avoid disodium phosphate as it may also worsen these symptoms. It may also increase phosphorus levels in people who eat a lot of processed foods containing these additives which are linked to thyroid problems, kidney diseases, heart and lung diseases, liver disease and Addison's disease.
