Description

Edible fiber is a type of carbohydrate that cannot be digested in the small intestine and so reaches the large intestine or colon. It is naturally present in edible plant foods such as cereals, dried peas, nuts, lentils, fruits, vegetables, and grains. It is grouped by its physical properties and has two different types that include soluble(dissolves in water) and insoluble(doesn't dissolves in water). Psyllium husk, oat, oat bran, and flaxseed are rich in both types of fibers. Fiber plays an important role to keep the digestive system healthy. If the body lacks fiber, it can be consumed through supplements. Fiber can be extracted through natural sources and added to supplements or fortified foods and drinks to boost their fiber content.
