Description

Ladyfish are elongated, slender fish with a compact oval cross section and large deeply forked tail or caudal fin with long, slender symmetrical lobes. The small head is pointed and both the mouth and eyes are quite large. The scales are small and thin. Ladyfish are found in inshore waters along the U.S., Atlantic coast south of Cape Cod and throughout the Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean Sea. The ladyfish grows to a maximum length of 3 feet (1 m) and weight of about 15 pounds (6.8 kilograms). A predatory fish, the ladyfish has small, sharp teeth and a bony throat plate between its mandibles. Ladyfish are edible. Although ladyfish is marketed fresh, salted and frozen, it is considered as having little value as food due to the meat being bony and dry. They are considered not ideal for human consumption.
