Medium Chain Triglycerides

Vegetarian

Description

Medium Chain Triglycerides are triglycerides with two or three fatty acids comprising 6–12 carbon atoms. The three richest sources of MCTs include, coconut oil, palm kernel oil, and coconut milk. MCTs are generally extracted from coconut and palm kernel oils in the laboratory, for commercial extraction. MCTs are a naturally occurring source of dietary fats but are partially man-made fats and their name refers to the way the carbon atoms are arranged in their chemical structure. As MCTs are saturated fats, they are not oxidised and thus considered beneficial for general health and athletes.

Health benefits

  • Medium Chain Triglycerides do not require bile salts for digestion and thus human body finds them easier to digest and metabolise. (1)
  • They are an efficient source of energy for athletes, especially long-distance runners and cyclists. (1)
  • MCTs can increase caloric burn and help with weight loss. (1)
  • They can help to improve insulin sensitivity in people with type 2 diabetes. (2)
  • It can help in maintaining cholesterol levels by increasing good cholesterol levels and reducing bad cholesterol levels in the body. (2)

Note

Medium Chain Triglycerides may trigger side effects that include diarrhea, nausea, gas, stomach upset and vomiting. MCts can interfere with cholesterol-lowering statin drugs. It may lead to the excessive buildup of ketones in the body if consumed regularly. This may prove harmful for diabetic people, triggering potentially life-threatening ketoacidosis. (2)
