Description

Microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) is a white-colored free-flowing powder made from refined wood pulp. It is a naturally occurring polymer that is made up of glucose units connected by a 1-4 beta glycosidic linkage. It is one of the well known inactive ingredients (Inactive ingredients are those components of a drug product that do not increase or affect the therapeutic action of an active ingredient, which is usually the active drug) that is approved within the European Union and was granted the E number E460 (i). It can be synthesized commercially in industries by various processes like reactive extrusion, enzyme-mediated, mechanical grinding, ultrasonication, steam explosion, and acid hydrolysis.

Note

If consumed in large quantities, it may increase the frequency and volume of bowel movements which may cause gas, bloating and diarrhea. Microcrystalline cellulose is also a potent allergen that is responsible for causing strong allergic reactions. (1)
