Preservatives are chemicals or substances which are used in food and beverages to prevent them from decomposition which may be due to bacterial growth or some chemical changes. They can be natural or synthetic preservatives. They are mostly added to processed and packaged food and drinks.
Look for the 'use by date' on the packaging of preservatives.
Consumption of preservatives could trigger breathing problems like asthma and bronchitis. It may also cause hyperactive behaviour in children. It can weaken heart tissues in aged people and also cause cancer and obesity.(1)
