Kokum is basically a small fruit, which happens to be red in colour and deepens to purple on ripening. It is also available in dried form in the market, and is know by other names like aamsul or kokam. Moreover, it is used as a souring agent in many Konkan and Maharashtrian dish. So it is a common substitute for tamarind, hence is very much preferred in fish curries as it augments the flavour.
