Poached Pears in Red Wine Recipe

Poached Pears in red wine is one simple yet scrumptious and elegant dessert. Why is it simple? Because Red wine is one main ingredient to poach the pears and this recipe can be prepared ahead of time and refrigerated before serving. And while poaching in red wine with an inch of Cinnamon stick, the whole house is surrounded with fruity cinnamon flavour. No one would say no to this decadent simple dessert. For non-alcoholic, substitute any fruit juice with honey, sugar with a hint of any favourite spice for wine. You may get the taste, but not the appetising beautiful red colour.

Recipe Notes

For poaching ,Pear has to be tender but firm. You can substitute any spice like clove, star anise etc. My favourite is all time cinnamon. If you have red wine is well and good for both colour and taste. You can use white wine or fruit juice or simple sugar solution with a hint of any spices. I prefer poached pears to refrigerate over night or at least few hours before serving. You can make it ahead of time for parties and can serve this simple yet elegant dessert as a centrepiece . No doubt everyone would love and indulge.

Ingredients For Poached Pears in Red Wine Recipe

Methods
  • 1. Wash pear with the stalk. Peel the skin with a peeler and scoop the base to remove the seeds as shown.
  • 2. In a wide pan add Red wine ,sugar and cinnamon and stir well on a low heat until sugar is completely dissolved.
  • 3. Now add pear to the cinnamon wine syrup and and cover the lid. Let it cook for five minutes.
  • 4. After five minutes with a wooden spatula gently flip the pears to the other side and let it cook for five minutes. Repeat twice until it is thoroughly cook on all sides.
  • 5. It almost take 20 to 25 minutes to cook on low heat. Make sure the pear stalk remains intact. You can see the red spiced wine is absorbed and thick in consistency.
  • 6. Switch off the flame and let it come to room temperature. Refrigerate the poached pear in the same pan with spiced wine so, it can absorb well and become more succulent.
  • 7. Serve chilled Poached Pear in wine with ice cream ,whipped cream, crumble, short crust etc. I served it with store bought digestive biscuit as a base to the succulent pear and garnish it with mint leaves.
